Veterans & VA Benefits
We understand you have questions about veteran hospice care & VA benefits. Here are answers to the most common concerns families share with us.
Veterans
Yes. Veterans enrolled in VA healthcare are eligible for VA-provided hospice services at no cost. This includes nursing care, pain management, social work, chaplain services, and aide support — delivered at home or in a facility.
In most cases, yes. A veteran can receive Medicare hospice benefits for their terminal illness and continue receiving VA benefits for unrelated conditions like a service-connected disability. Both programs can run simultaneously, providing more coverage with fewer out-of-pocket costs.
Depending on eligibility, veterans may receive: full hospice care through Medicare or Medicaid; VA Aid & Attendance benefit — a monthly supplement for veterans who need help with daily activities; VA Caregiver Support Program — resources and financial support for family caregivers; home modification grants for qualifying service-connected veterans; and continued VA disability compensation through the end of life.
Families may be entitled to: burial benefits — the VA covers burial in a national cemetery, a grave marker, and a burial flag at no cost; Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) — monthly payments to surviving spouses and dependents; Survivors' Pension — income-based monthly benefit for surviving spouses and unmarried children; bereavement counseling — free grief counseling through VA Vet Centers; and CHAMPVA — healthcare coverage for eligible surviving spouses and dependents.
